Labor Arbitrations

Peter Vaira is the Independent Hearing Officer of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA). This is a national post created by the Department of Justice and the union to rid the union of corruption and the influence of organized crime. Mr. Vaira hears cases across the country regarding union trusteeships, internal discipline, election protests, and internal disputes. The hearings are conducted in a similar manner to a labor arbitration hearing.

Mr. Vaira has heard over 400 cases as the hearing officer of the labor union. Some hearings have been very lengthy, often lasting several weeks. All of his opinions are published and are collected in bound volumes every year. His decisions have been widely publicized in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Chicago Tribune. He has held this post since 1995.

Labor Unions with internal problems or companies and labor unions involved in labor arbitrations that arise under collective bargaining agreements are encouraged to contact Vaira & Riley, P.C. to schedule a consultation with Mr. Vaira.

Commercial Arbitrations

Binding arbitration is growing in popularity in the business community to settle commercial disputes between parties who want to avoid lengthy and costly litigation. The quality of the arbitration proceeding depends upon the skill and experience of the selected arbitrators. With his role as a union hearing officer, his courtroom experience, and his status as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Mr. Vaira is a valuable arbitrator for commercial disputes.

Positions held by Mr. Vaira include:

  • Court appointed arbitrator for the Fen Phen Diet Drug Class Action Suit settlement in Philadelphia, hearing cases from across the United States.
  • Certified Mediator for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
  • Panelist, Moderator, International Arbitration Seminar, Salzburg, Austria, 2004.
