Peter Vaira is the Independent Hearing Officer of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA). This is a national post created by the Department of Justice and the union to rid the union of corruption and the influence of organized crime. Mr. Vaira hears cases across the country regarding union trusteeships, internal discipline, election protests, and internal disputes. The hearings are conducted in a similar manner to a labor arbitration hearing.
Mr. Vaira has heard over 400 cases as the hearing officer of the labor union. Some hearings have been very lengthy, often lasting several weeks. All of his opinions are published and are collected in bound volumes every year. His decisions have been widely publicized in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Chicago Tribune. He has held this post since 1995.
